Jim's Notebook: Garrett Uekman 7-on-7 Event Takes Over War Memorial; Shiloh Welcomes 32 Teams

A dozen high school programs and seven youth teams will compete in the first Garrett Uekman Memorial 7-on-7 Tournament Friday and Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. Meanwhile, the state's 7-on-7 season winds down also with the Southwest Elite 7-on-7 event at Springdale's Shiloh Christian. The tournament is a qualifier for the National 7-on-7 Championship scheduled for Hoover, Ala., and 32 teams are competing in Springdale. And former ASU star Tyrell Johnson has lined up several pro football friends for a free football camp next week in Rison.

Quarterback Kiehl Frazier is gone to Auburn and could compete for playing time this fall as a freshman. Does that mean all of Shiloh Christian’s 4A title hopes have gone with him? I remember the stories, while growing up in Pine Bluff, of how the fabled Zebras of the 1920s-30s were built not just with local boys, but also with sudden “move-ins” of families, thanks to the area paper mills and railroad industry. Pine Bluff in those years had teams of national renown, including one that drubbed the supposed nation’s No. 1 team, Steubenville, Ohio, 68-0 in a dream match one afternoon in December.

Shiloh Christian has petitioned the Arkansas Activities Association to compete in Class 5A. This move bumps the Saints three classifications above where their enrollment would place them if they were a public school. So, what happens if/when the Saints are approved to move up with schools nearly five times their size and still find a way to win a Class 5A state championship? What then?

PBS 'Frontline' Features Shiloh Christian, Arkansas High Schools In Documentary

A documentary crew began filming Shiloh Christian football players last summer. The Saints, one of Arkansas’ most successful and polarizing programs, agreed to let the Frontline crew document the season as part of a piece on the growth of high school football. Frontline cameras also made their way to Arkansas Children’s hospital to as two local players struggled with the effects of heat stroke. How do these storyline intersect? Tonight at 8 p.m. PBS airs “Football High,” a 60-minute documentary compiled in the state last football season.

Euless (Texas) Trinity High School put an 80-26 hurting on three-time Arkansas Class 4A champion Shiloh Christian back on Sept. 6. But, so much for being a "super" team. Euless Trinity was beaten in the Texas 5A big schools state title game on Saturday by Pearland, and even gave up an embarrassing trick play to boot. Check it out.

Gus Malzahn watched his prize recruit for Auburn, Shiloh Christian senior quarterback Kiehl Frazier, perform in the Class 4A state championship game at War Memorial Stadium. Malzahn left at the half with Shiloh up 34-20.

Shiloh Christian won its third straight Class 4A championship, and Kiehl Frazier became the first athlete in Arkansas high school history to be named a championship game most valuable player three straight years as the Saints defeated Pulaski Academy 61-40 Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.
