Why isn’t Arkansas State coach Hugh Freeze satisfied? Freeze outlined his championship-caliber expectations and areas that could use improvement on Monday as the featured speaker at the Little Rock Touchdown Club. In his first year as head coach Freeze discussed the philosophy that has helped the Red Wolves (4-2, 2-0) get to where they are and will, it is hoped, lead them to a conference championship and New Orleans Bowl.

If you’re going to take over a program, Arkansas State's Hugh Freeze said, it helps to already have a quality quarterback in place, and Ryan Aplin’s numbers scream quality. After playing as Corey Leonard’s backup in 2009, Aplin took the reins last season, Freeze’s first on the ASU staff, and delivered school records in total yards (3,416), passing yards (2,939), touchdowns (21) and pass attempts (410).

Steve Roberts, whose last two seasons in a nine-year head coaching career at Arkansas State ended with 4-8 records, announced his resignation as the Red Wolves' football coach. According to ASU athletic director Dean Lee, Roberts' resignation is effective Tuesday at 5 p.m. and a search for his successor will begin immediately. No ASU assistant coaches have been let go, seven went out on the road recruiting Monday, and Lee did not rule out hiring from within.

Now that Arkansas State rediscovered how to win with a 28-point fourth-quarter outburst against Florida Atlantic, the Red Wolves can finish the year strong starting with a nationally televised game Tuesday night in Jonesboro against Middle Tennessee. The schedule makers were kind this time, too, allowing 10 days before playing the preseason Sun Belt favorite Blue Raiders, then another 11 days before a conference game at home with Western Kentucky. ASU finishes the season on the road: at Navy and at Florida International. ASU Coach Steve Roberts doesn't want his Wolves to look any further than Tuesday's game, however.
