Jim Harris: Malzahn Can’t Help But Be Noticed By Big-Time Programs Now With Convincing Victories

by Jim Harris 10/24/2012 2:48 pm

We’ve all heard that Gus Malzahn is in it for the long haul in Jonesboro. He’s said it himself. He’s not a one-and-done for the Arkansas State Red Wolves, but instead he intends to build the Red Wolves into a program that can compete for a Top 25 ranking annually. We’re glad he says it, and we hope he really means it. The problem is, Gus, if you keep hanging half-a-hundred on the hot-name coaches in the Sun Belt Conference on their home fields week after week, you’re going to have a decision to make. And while money may not always matter, this much money at these kinds of programs will matter.

Qushaun Lee didn’t miss a step. That was clear last Thursday when the sophomore linebacker turned in one of the best games of his two-year career. by Todd Traub 10/5/2012 1:37 pm

WHAT WE LEARNED: Special teams continue to be a sore spot for Arkansas State but the offense, with J.D. McKissic emerging as the top receiver, and the defense led by grabby defensive back Qushaun Lee showed they can overcome slow starts, grab momentum and turn in complementary performances.

2-Minute Drill: ULM 34, Arkansas 31 (OT)

by Chris Bahn 9/9/2012 12:45 am

Why Arkansas Lost: Take your pick of places to point the finger of blame. Defensive breakdowns. Poor play calling. Injuries to key players, including quarterback Tyler Wilson. Ultimately it boiled down to the No. 8 Razorbacks not being able to stop the Warhawks, who outgained Arkansas 550-377. Arkansas blew a 28-7 lead in suffering arguably the worst loss in program history. ULM converted six of seven fourth downs, including on the game-winning, 16-yard run by quarterback Kolton Browning in overtime.

by 8/12/2012 9:38 am

Arkansas State lost many of its top playmakers on defense from a 10-victory season in 2011. Gone too is the defensive coordinator who helped the Red Wolves’ resurgence last season.
