The Western Golf Association sought out Warren Stephens’ exclusive golf enclave for its prestigious Western Amateur tournament, which typically has been staged at top courses in the Chicago area and last year drew a field from 13 countries. In fact, for 43 years the Western Am has not been played outside the Chicago area or away from its previous permanent residence, Michigan’s Point O’ Woods Golf and Country Club.

Dan Snider, the Alotian Club's director of golf and the longtime coach and mentor to PGA Tour pro Bryce Molder, will enter the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame in October along with two outstanding state amateur players, Petey King and Dr. Mack Moore, and late PGA club pro Tim Zimmerebner. The inductions are set for Oct. 25 at Chenal Country Club. Meanwhile, the Arkansas State Golf Association is prepping for two big tournaments: the annual Four Ball-Championship and its tournament in May for youths 7-17, the Monk Wade Classic at the First Tee in Little Rock.

Average golfers and regular fans of the sport see Augusta National Golf Club and its beauty every spring, thanks to the Masters Tournament being televised. If we wanted to see up-close the greatness of Pine Valley in New Jersey, we could follow amateur golfers for one weekend in the fall. For free. But, we wondered, would we ever have the chance to watch skilled golfers take on Arkansas' greatest, but rarely seen, golfing treasure? Warren Stephens, the Little Rock businessman, said Wednesday he just wanted the right event to come Alotian's way. That tournament will be coming in 2013.

Golf Digest's prestigious rankings of the best courses in the United States in its May 2011 issue placed Warren Stephens' The Alotian Club at No. 14. The 13 courses than rank ahead of it, some more than a century old, are without question among the best that will ever be constructed, and most new courses will be fortunate to copy some of their wondrous aesthetics. Alotian is the only Arkansas course to grace these rankings. In the state breakdown, Alotian and Pleasant Valley Country Club ranked 1-2.
