Former Arkansas State assistant and Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin led the Steelers past the Washington Redskins in Stripe Bowl I while former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett finally got some minutes, after biding his time behind Tom Brady, as New England trounced St. Louis in London.

Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett made his way around the lower level of Razorback Stadium posing for pictures and signing autographs for nearly 40 minutes during the Red-White game on April 21. It didn’t matter if the fan was a grown man, college girl or a child, Mallett took time for them. Mallett, the record-setting Razorback quarterback now a reserve with the New England Patriots, was particularly generous with the kids and even when he tried to break away from the crowd, he couldn’t. There was always one more person to pose with or sign for and Mallett did his best to oblige. Remembering Mallett working his way around the stadium became a great starting point for an interview we did a few weeks later.

Ryan Mallett is in a familiar position. Mallett, currently a backup in New England, sat out the 2008 season at Arkansas after transferring and spent the year with the view that quarterbacking the scout team was his “game” for the week. It was a great way to stay engaged while waiting his turn for the Razorbacks. Now Mallett is approaching his first season with the Patriots much the same way.
