Contract negotiations between John L. Smith and the University of Arkansas were consistent with the handling of other coaching contracts, an athletic department spokesman said on Monday. Smith, who has arranged for $600,000 of his $850,000 salary to be deferred until after his tenure as Razorback coach ended, recently filed for bankruptcy, citing $40 million in debt. Creditors are legally entitled only to assets reported at the time of a bankruptcy filing.

On Wednesday, Smith, 63, filed amendments to his original Sept. 6 Chapter 7 bankruptcy, showing the coach faced liabilities of $40.7 million, up from the $25.7 million he first identified.
