Josh Alberius knew he had no place to hide, feeling worse than anyone in War Memorial Stadium after an interception of his pass set up Maumelle for the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter. But Alberius rallied his Little Rock Christian squad, covering 61 yards in just under 3 minutes and scoring with 35 seconds left on a fourth-down, 7-yard toss to Will Duncan for a 28-24 win Tuesday in the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic.

Understandably, Central Arkansas Christian Coach Tommy Shoemaker is hoping for a low-scoring game when his Mustangs open the season on Monday against Pulaski Academy. "Low scoring and controlling the ball," he said. His Mustangs last year were one of 14 Pulaski Academy opponents who couldn't keep up when a football game broke out into a track meet, and Shoemaker knows a wide-open game favors talented Pulaski Academy again this year in the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic.

In other circumstances, Saturday night's 5-3 lost to Florida might have been viewed as a heart-breaker for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Instead, when Hog coach Dave Van Horn met with the media at Baum Stadium afterward, he seemed somewhat satisfied. Considering Arkansas had lost five best-of-three SEC series coming in, that's understandable.

Looking for good high school football this weekend? The first Friday of the state playoffs won't be just a bunch of matchups of high seeds against weaker teams that should roll over. In fact, couple of good, must-see matchups in the higher classes feature Springdale at Bryant in 7A and Vilonia at Batesville in 5A. The latter will feature Matthew Showalter, whose heroics for Batesville's unbeaten Pioneers reportedly have attracted major college interest.
