The 17th annual Women’s Foundation of Arkansas Power of the Purse Luncheon was held at the Little Rock Marriott and honored Denise Garner of Fayetteville as the Woman of the Year in Philanthropy, and Charlotte Schexnayder as the Brownie Ledbetter Award recipient. Carla Harris served as the keynote speaker.

A collaboration between the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas and the ESSE Purse Museum & Store, the Evening Bag reception was held on the evening after the Power of the Purse Luncheon and featured music, conversation, hors d’oeuvres, wine, craft beers, a purse auction and more to benefit the WFA.

It’s an unfortunate novelty. When people learn that 27-year-old Shannon Heard is a recreational kickboxer, eyebrows go up. Some of her friends or colleagues, should they share the same interest, would not be met with the same surprise. It is noteworthy, unfortunately, because she is a woman.

Women are caught in a double bind: Brag on themselves, and they may be seen as pushy. Fail to brag on themselves, and they may be seen as pushovers. That’s just one of the reasons that last week’s launch of the Arkansas Women’s Hall of Fame by the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Arkansas Business Publishing Group, is a welcome development. The Hall of Fame’s purpose is to recognize the many contributions of women in the state.

Power of the Purse

The Women’s Foundation of Arkansas hosted two Power of the Purse events this year. The first, “Evening Bag,” was a casual reception held at the ESSE Purse Museum the evening before the luncheon. The 16th annual luncheon took place the following day at the Statehouse Convention Center and honored Catherine Hughes, founding member of WFA, as the Woman of the Year in Philanthropy.

Dorothy Morris of Hot Springs was honored as the 2013 Woman of the Year in Philanthropy; Kathy Webb was honored with the Brownie Ledbetter Civic Engagement Award.
