Debe Hollingsworth: The New Mayor In a Troubled Town

Debe Hollingsworth was swept into the Pine Bluff mayor's office Nov. 6 with such a strong electoral wave that no runoff vote was required, despite a ballot of nine candidates. She is the first woman to serve as Pine Bluff’s mayor since Carolyn Robinson was elected in 1984.

Somehow, when Bill Cravens tells his story of how a University of Arkansas-trained industrial engineer ended up with a career-spanning relationship with the Oaklawn Jockey Club, spent time working as a certified public accountant, ran and merged banks and then came out of a heart-attack-induced retirement to guide Alltel Information Services and help found a community bank, it all adds up.

George Worthen comes from a long line of bankers. “We’re an old banking family in central Arkansas that goes all the way back to 1887,” he says. In fact, it was Worthen’s great-grandfather who founded Worthen Bank in Little Rock in the late 1800s.
