Cotton acreage is down sharply this year in Arkansas. Agriculture officials estimate that 320,000 acres of cotton have been planted in Arkansas this year. That's only about half as much cotton as growers planted in 2012.

Despite summer's punishing drought, Arkansas farmers produced record crops of soybean and bumper crops of corn, rice and cotton, according to figures released Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Arkansas farmers are harvesting the last of their cotton and soybeans, and the rice harvest is already complete. Sbout 90 percent of the cotton crop is in and 84 percent of soybeans have been harvested.
