The Walton Family Foundation has awarded a $5 million challenge grant in support of a capital campaign to add 30,000-SF of space to the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville.

The $23 million project would add a new atrium lobby on Dickson Street; expand and renovate the center's Starr Theater; add space for technical and theatrical equipment; and create new administrative offices.

Planners would like to complete the Dickson Street work by fall 2016. The center is working around its regular programming to ensure a full 2015-16 season, the tickets for which go on sale to current subscribers next week.

"We are honored to receive a $5 million challenge grant from the Walton Family Foundation," Peter B. Lane, president and CEO of Walton Arts Center, said in a news release. "The Walton Family Foundation has been a generous supporter of the Walton Arts Center since the beginning. The Foundation’s participation in this capital campaign represents a strong vote of confidence in our future in Fayetteville, and the future of the arts in Northwest Arkansas."

Funds from the challenge gift will be matched by contributions from other donors in order to reach the $23 million goal.

The nonprofit performing arts venue, which hosts artists and entertainers from around the world, opened in 1992.
