Large Hospital Finalist: Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Little Rock

3 min read

Now more than a century old, Arkansas Children’s Hospital is the only hospital system in the state solely dedicated to caring for children, which allows the organization to uniquely shape the landscape of pediatric care in Arkansas.

“Arkansas Children’s is committed to providing care close to home for the children of Arkansas,” said Marcy Doderer, president and CEO. “Our mission: We champion children by making them better today and healthier tomorrow.”

Founded as an orphanage, Arkansas Children’s has championed children through the quality and innovation of its world-class medical staff. Boasting an internationally renowned reputation for medical breakthroughs and intensive treatments, unique surgical procedures and forward-thinking research, ACH is committed to providing every child with access to the best care available, regardless of location or resources.

Arkansas Children’s, Inc., includes Arkansas Children’s Hospital, a 359-bed hospital in Little Rock with the state’s only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center, burn center, Level 4 neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care, and research institute as well as a nationally-recognized transport service.

Spanning 36 city blocks and numbering 505 physicians and 200 residents in pediatrics and pediatric specialties among its 4,400 total employees, it is one of the 25 largest children’s hospitals in the United States and is nationally ranked by U.S. News World & Report in pulmonology and neonatal care.

“Care for children is different than care for adults,” Doderer said. “At Arkansas Children’s Hospital, we have dedicated ourselves to bringing the latest pediatric medical expertise and technology to children of all ages. Best of all, we center our care around the family. Our teams of physicians, nurses and other staff work tirelessly to make sure the entire family has the resources it needs. We are dedicated to changing children’s lives.”

The hospital invests considerable resources in outreach programs to help head off injuries and illness before they happen.

According to the ACH Outreach department annual report for 2014-2015, the six-person staff visited 96 communities in 53 Arkansas counties spanning more than 22,000 miles. During that tour, the staff reached over 63,000 individuals, distributed more than 166,000 materials and installed more than 150 car seats. The staff delivered a variety of educational opportunities via more than 450 classroom presentations and hosting nearly 24,500 children through a fire safety house.

Soon, the Little Rock campus will have company in the Natural State to help carry out its mission as never before.

“Our sister campus, Arkansas Children’s Northwest, is under development in northwest Arkansas and will bring 233,613 square feet of inpatient beds, emergency care, clinic rooms and diagnostic services to children in that corner of the state,” Doderer said.
