Little Rock Port Reports Tonnage for January

1 min read

The Little Rock Port Authority reported on Wednesday that January activity across all operations started the year off on a positive note.

Logistic Services Inc., the port’s stevedoring partner, handled a total of 36 barges during the month, according to a news release. Fourteen were worked at the River Terminal Dock, while 22 were worked at the Slackwater Harbor Dock.

Total tonnage handled across both docks was slightly more than 54,000 net tons. The commodities included aluminum ingots and T-bars, granite fines, potash, sand, scrap, stainless scrap, steel coils, wetcake and wire rod coils. Break bulk commodities accounted for 70 percent of the cargoes handled, the release states.

In 2016, Logistic Services Inc. handled the third highest annual barge count, loading or unloading a total of 451 barges. The barges accounted for 685,000 net tons of cargo, the second highest tonnage handled across the docks in port history.

“Due to scheduling, we expect February activity to slow slightly,” Port Authority Executive Director Bryan Day said in the news release. “However, we are confident that river tonnage will increase in 2017 and we expect our industry partners and others along the [McClellan–Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System] to experience positive and sustainable growth this fiscal year.”
