Safe Foods Corp. of North Little Rock said Friday that it would spend $15 million for a new facility and add 35 jobs by the first quarter of 2019.

The privately held company, which works with food processors to reduce pathogens that cause food-borne illnesses, purchased in November a 120,000-SF facility on 22 acres at 1301 E. 8th St. in North Little Rock for the expansion. The company said it is working to finalize plans for the building design and sustainability, adding that it aims to seek LEED certification.

"This expansion aligns with our core value of innovation while increasing our competitive advantage," CEO Chris Coleman said in a news release. "Safe Foods is committed to providing quality products and services that ultimately help keep consumers healthy. This investment better positions us to continue that legacy in a more effective and efficient manner."

The company said the new building will put various operations under one roof and allow easy access to rail and interstate highways. The company employs more than 80 people at offices in North Little Rock and Rogers.

Safe Foods said Lewis Architects Engineers of Little Rock will provide overall design services, ECCI Inc. of Little Rock will serve as project engineer and Nabholz Construction Corp. of Conway will be general contractor.

The project qualifies for the Arkansas Economic Development Commission's Advantage Arkansas incentive, through which it will receive a state income tax credit for new employees hired as a result of the expansion.
