USA Truck Reports $2.5 Million 2Q Profit

USA Truck Inc. of Van Buren reported second-quarter income of $2.5 million Thursday, an increase from the $2.8 million loss in the second quarter of 2017.

The quarter was USA Truck’s fourth consecutive profitable one. Revenue for the quarter was $135.4 million, up from $107.4 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Earnings per share was 31 cents. A year ago, earnings per share was a negative 35 cents.

The big boost to USA Truck’s success was thanks to a better route network and better rates for the trucking segment, the company said. Trucking revenue for the quarter was $85.6 million, up from $71.5 million a year ago.

Revenue per truck per week, which the company said was its “most critical metric,” rose nearly 20 percent to $3,449 from $2,885. Trucking traveled fewer miles (39.5 million miles compared to 40.8 million miles) but revenue per loaded mile rose more than 21 percent from $1.76 in 2017 to $2.15 in the second quarter of 2018.

USAT Logistics reported second-quarter revenue of $49.8 million, up from $35.8 million in the same quarter of 2017.

“Our continued focus on strengthening strategic customer relationships, adding density to our network and providing strong customer service has also led to new dedicated opportunities which we expect will enhance utilization and be accretive to the bottom line,” USA Truck CEO James Reed said. “We remain focused on seating trucks, improving base revenue per available tractor per week and increasing volume in our USAT Logistics segment.”
