Renewable energy comprised 11 percent of energy consumption in the United States last year, a record, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Renewable energy includes a variety of sources: biomass (such as wood and wood waste and ethanol), hydropower, geothermal, wind and solar. Use of those last two sources — wind and solar — reached record highs in 2017.
