2 min read

Joseph Bates III of the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Health Care Heroes awards luncheon on April 24.

The event, which took place at the Embassy Suites in Little Rock, was hosted by Arkansas Business Publishing Group of Little Rock and presented by Complete Care Inc. of North Little Rock. The event honors individuals, companies and organizations making a significant impact on the quality of health care in Arkansas.

Bates, 85, is closing in on his 62nd year in health care since graduating from UAMS. He is also senior public health adviser to the director of the Arkansas Department of Health and associate dean for Public Health Practice at the UAMS College of Public Health.

“My simple rule for deciding on how to choose a career is to find what you love and get very, very good at it,” said Bates, whose multiple roles include professor of epidemiology at the UAMS College of Public Health. “To do well and be happy in the medical profession you should enjoy science, love people and have a good liberal education.”

As part of his duties, Bates serves as a co-principal investigator on a research project that is evaluating the value of community health workers in the management of high blood pressure in Desha County.

Others honored at the event:

ABPG solicited nominations from health professionals across the state. An independent panel of health care experts served as award judges. Event sponsors were: Complete Care, Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care, Arkansas Hospital Association, Arkansas Federal Credit Union, Edafio, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and UAMS.
