Proposed 1% Sales Tax Increase Defeated in Jonesboro

JONESBORO — A proposed 1 percent sales tax increase has been narrowly defeated by voters in Jonesboro.

Complete but unofficial returns on Tuesday show 5,016 voted against the plan with 4,805 voting for it.

The proposal would have raised the city's sales tax by 1 percent for 12 years. City officials say Jonesboro's current 1 percent sales tax generated just more than $18 million in 2018.

If approved, the funds were to be divided between public safety improvements such as for police and fire protection to be determined by the City Council and with quality of life projects such as parks and a performing arts center to be decided by an oversight committee.
