A-State Gets $419K Grant for Cancer Research (Movers & Shakers)

Guolei “Jason” Zhou of Jonesboro, associate professor of cell and cancer biology at Arkansas State University, and his research group have received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue their work.

The $419,190 award for the three-year project is titled “Phosphor-regulation of CAP1 Functions in Cell Adhesion and Migration.”

The new funding will allow Zhou and his associates to investigate the functions of a cytoskeletal protein, CAP1, in cell adhesion and migration, and how it is regulated by signal molecules the cell receives and uses.


Dr. Jude Cope, Dr. Christine Hartford and Dr. Hilliary Sismondo have been hired as assistant professors of clinical medicine at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine-Arkansas in Jonesboro.

The three physicians are the newest members of NYITCOM-Arkansas’ clinical medicine faculty and will teach NYITCOM’s case-based learning and doctor-patient relationship courses.

Steven C. Ricke

Steven C. Ricke, professor of food science at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, received the Evonik Corporation Award for Achievement in Poultry Science at the annual Poultry Science Association meeting this year in Montreal.


Christopher Schwanke, an assistant professor of mathematics at Lyon College in Batesville, has been appointed to the post of extraordinary senior lecturer at North-West University in South Africa.

Schwanke was a postdoctoral researcher at North-West University from 2015 to 2018, and the new position gives him access to the campus, academic journals and travel funds through the end of 2021.
