Physician of the Year Finalist: Stephen Canon

Physician of the Year Finalist: Stephen Canon
Stephen Canon of Arkansas Children’s

Stephen Canon likes helping kids be well and happy.

It’s just that simple.

Canon is chief of Pediatric Urology and medical director at Arkansas Children’s Medical Group. In that capacity he cares for patients, leads and manages the urology division at Arkansas Children’s, oversees and directs the medical activities of Arkansas Children’s Medical Group, researches urologic diseases in order to better understand and treat patients and trains the next generation of urologists.

The opportunity to diagnose and surgically treat diseases in children, in order to help their well being and quality of life, is what drew Canon to his field.

Canon faces a number of challenges in his professional life, including striving for perfection in reconstructive pediatric urology, which “as in other fields, is very hard to attain but is worth striving for,” he said.

Canon has multiple awards and accolades to his credit and has been a leader in the field of telemedicine for Arkansas Children’s. He currently performs urology telehealth in northwest Arkansas, Texarkana and Fort Smith, with the goal of expanding to the Delta region, southeast Arkansas and the communities of West Helena and Magnolia.

Much of the care Canon and his colleagues provide, from an individual patient standpoint, is very sensitive in nature. But from a group standpoint he has been gratified to see his team grow from one pediatric urologist and a small supporting team to a robust group of three pediatric urologists, three nurse practitioners and a strong supporting team ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News and World Report.

Canon earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, is an executive committee member of The American Academy of Pediatrics Urology Section, and a member of the American Urologic Association, Arkansas Medical Society, Society of Fetal Urology and Arkansas Urologic Society.

He has published papers and written abstracts on several subjects within his field and earned awards and honors including the John F. and Bella A. Lubben Award in Urology and the Arkansas Children’s Auxiliary John F. Redman, MD, Endowed Chair.
