Employment in the United States is forecast to grow by 8.4 million jobs to 169.4 million jobs during the decade of 2018-28, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Or it was; the report was released months before the coronavirus pandemic caused widespread job losses.

This would be an annual increase of 0.5%, slower than the 2008-18 annual increase of 0.8%.

Most of the fastest-growing jobs are in health care and related industries. “Increased demand for healthcare services from an aging population and people with chronic conditions will drive much of the expected employment growth,” said the report, released in September.

Growth in the renewable energy industry will also drive job growth in that area. “Despite the rapid growth projected in these occupations, their small employment size means that the growth is projected to yield only 6,100 new jobs and 3,800 new jobs, respectively,” the report said.
