Remember when Simmons Bank announced that it would close three branches in Arkansas permanently?
We don’t remember either, but George Makris Jr., CEO of Simmons First National Corp. of Pine Bluff, said the branches at Markham and Rodney Parham in Little Rock, near McCain Mall in North Little Rock and near Hendrix College in Conway were among 11 branches in four states previously identified for permanent closure. That happened Friday.
We do remember that Simmons closed more than 50 branches temporarily in response to the pandemic, while others were converted to drive-through with lobby access by appointment. And Makris hinted last week that the branch network is likely to be pared even more as the pandemic has accelerated online banking trends.
“One thing that has been clear during this time is the usage of our digital (online and mobile) options has increased tremendously,” he said in an email. “...I expect that we, along with other banks, will reduce their locations over time as customer habits dictate.”
