J.B. Hunt’s Mass Movement Buy Adds to Final Mile Portfolio

2 min read

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell said Monday that it acquired the final-mile delivery company Mass Movement Inc. of Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Terms of the deal weren’t released. The acquisition was the company’s fourth of a final mile company since 2017.

“Mass Movement presents an opportunity to expand our expertise in the final mile delivery of big and bulky products,” J.B. Hunt CEO John Roberts said. “The acquisition complements our current service and will enhance our ability to meet the growing demand of customers in the commercial health and fitness industry.”

J.B. Hunt spent $136 million to acquire Special Logistic Dedicated of Houston in 2017 and $117.5 million for Cory 1st Choice Home Delivery of Secaucus, New Jersey and RDI Last Mile Co. of South Easton, Massachusetts in 2019.

In April, the company announced it was reporting its Final Mile Segment’s financials as a separate division. Previously, it had been a part of the J.B. Hunt’s Dedicated Contract Services.

Final Mile delivery services have become increasingly important in recent years. J.B. Hunt reported fiscal 2019 revenue of $566 million; for the first three quarters of fiscal 2020, the company reported revenue of $475 million, up 7% from the previous year.

Mass Movement specializes in fitness equipment delivery, installation and warehousing. Its co-founders, Dom Simonetti and Jim Sullivan, will assume leadership roles with J.B. Hunt. Mass Movement generated $29 million in revenue in 2019, J.B. Hunt said.

The company said it made the deal using cash on hand. Mitchell Williams Selig Gates & Woodyard PLLC of Little Rock served its legal advisor.

Last week, Walmart Inc. of Bentonville purchased a last-mile delivery startup, Joyrun.
