The state’s medical marijuana industry, still not yet three years old, got a glimpse of what it’s mature market might become this year, surpassing $250 million in total sales by mid-December.

All but one of the state’s licensed 38 dispensaries are in business, expanding a market that sold $175 million worth of cannabis in 2020. Nearly 80,000 Arkansans have medicinal marijuana cards.

“A total of $254 million has been spent by patients this year at the state’s 37 dispensaries” as of Dec. 16, state spokesman Scott Hardin said. “Since the first dispensary opened in mid-2019, patients have spent $486 million to obtain 71,829 pounds of medical marijuana.”

Those sales have generated $54 million in state tax revenue. May of this year was the biggest tax month yet for Arkansas cannabis with $3.28 million in proceeds.

“The Arkansas Department of Health reports 79,167 active patient cards,” Hardin said, noting that the 38th and final dispensary, 3J Investments, is working toward a 2022 opening in Van Buren. The originally licensed site was Lamar in Johnson County, but the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission granted a change of location.

“The Commission has issued eight cultivation licenses, the maximum allowed under Amendment 98,” Hardin said recently. “Initially, five were licensed in 2018. That was followed by the remaining three licenses in 2020. Seven of the eight are operational [approved to grow by Alcoholic Beverage Control Division of the Arkansas Department of Finance & Administration; the ABC oversees marijuana rules enforcement]. The two most recent to receive this approval are New Day Cultivation of Hot Springs and River Valley Relief of Fort Smith.”

The eighth company, Carpenter Farms, is working on its facility, Hardin said. “The Commission granted a seven month extension to Carpenter Farms earlier this year." The company must pass final inspection within this time frame, he said.

Hardin offered a dispensary-by-dispensary breakdown of sales through the history of the program:
