Ashley Sims always loved numbers, but it was the operational side of business that hooked her, and learning those skills has propelled her to a fast-paced career at fast-growing Rock Dental Brands of Little Rock.

Sims, who earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in 2013, has been at Rock Dental since 2017 and chief financial officer for four years.

The company has ballooned during her time there. Since she’s been CFO, Rock Dental has grown its network from two states to four and pumped up revenue by 71% and EBITDA by 178%. It has about 700 employees.

“When I started, we had 28 practices, and we’re just short of 100 today,” she said, citing the acquisition in September of four practices in Alabama. “So it’s been a journey.”

A pivotal time for Sims’ career was working as an accounting manager at Windstream Enterprise from 2013 to 2017. A finance leadership program there introduced her to various company departments, a mentor and facetime with executives.

“I really learned a lot from my time at Windstream about scale and the power of data and technology, and I was able to bring that mindset over to Rock,” she said. “And so I was confident that I could add value, but also could just have my hands wrapped around the whole thing, versus being in piecemeal.”

That means Sims is involved not just in the numbers, but also the strategy and systems that support an expanding enterprise. Working on the Alabama deal, she said, was a six-month project that included vetting financials and assembling funding.

“Strategically growing the business with a great team makes me excited to come to work each and every day,” she said.
