Well into the third decade of an award-winning career, Phyllis Rogers continues to oversee big projects, including an extraordinary effort at the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care to more than double the employee count during the early stages of the pandemic.

Rogers, chief financial officer at the nonprofit since 2019, oversees an accounting team and a human resources office, each with about seven people. But to work a contract to provide COVID contact tracing for the Arkansas Department of Health, the small HR staff had to coordinate the hiring and onboarding of 500 temps in short order.

“Being over HR and accounting, both departments were very busy hiring and paying this staff, in addition to our 300 regular employees,” she said. “This was a huge challenge that we met head on and were highly successful.”

Rogers began her finance career in 1986 as a staff accountant at Stephens Diversified Leasing Corp. of Little Rock (purchased by SunTrust Credit in 1995). She rose to vice president and controller before leaving in 2000 to join Delta Dental of Arkansas of Sherwood as CFO, where she worked for 17 years. In 2013, she won the Arkansas Business CFO of the Year Award for work at the dental and vision insurance provider.

Rogers left Delta Dental looking for a new challenge, and recruiters quickly came calling. After a stint at Forevercare, the Highmark company that bid for Arkansas’ PASSE (provider-led Arkansas shared savings entity) program, Ray Hanley persuaded her to join AFMC. Hanley, its longtime CEO, retired this year.

Outside AFMC, Rogers is the co-founder and co-host of the “Legit Chix” podcast, which features guests who help local small-business women be more successful. She’s also a member of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock College of Business Advisory Council.
