Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that she'll appoint Dr. Kay Chandler of Little Rock, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, as the state's surgeon general.

Chandler replaces Dr. Greg Bledsoe, who announced his resignation Friday. Bledsoe was appointed to the position in 2015 by former Gov. Asa Hutchinson.

Chandler practices at Cornerstone Clinic in Little Rock. She serves on the board of the Pulaski County Medical Society and the board of trustees of the Arkansas Medical Society.

In a news release, Huckabee called Chandler a "skilled, qualified" doctor with decades of experience. "I look forward to working together to protect the health, well-being, and individual freedoms of Arkansans," Sanders said.

Chandler holds a bachelor's in chemistry from Hendrix College and received her M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She completed her residency training at UAMS.

Chandler is known for providing women’s health care information on KTHV's "Medical Monday" segment.
