Former UA Little Rock Coach Steve Shields Joins Carty & Co.

2 min read

Former University of Arkansas at Little Rock basketball coach Steve Shields has joined the Little Rock office of Memphis-based investment firm Carty & Co., reuniting with former player Rush “Buddy” Harding IV.

Shields joins the broker-dealer’s public finance office from the city of North Little Rock, where he was the director of parks and recreation for nearly three years. In his new role, Shields will “help communities throughout Arkansas find the funding they need to grow and improve,” the firm said in a news release.

Edmond Hurst, Carty & Co.’s head of public finance, said in a statement that Shields “knows the importance that municipal infrastructure has on the quality of life in our communities, and he is going to use this opportunity to make a state-wide impact.”

Shields coached UA Little Rock for 12 seasons, leading the Trojans in 2011 to a conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance. He’s the winningest coach in program history.

Harding, senior vice president and manager of Carty & Co.’s Little Rock office, played guard for Shields from 2004-2007. After working with his father Rush Harding III at Crews & Associates, he jumped to Carty & Co. early last year to lead its expansion to Little Rock.

“Shields’ teams refused to be outworked, met every challenge head on, and would never shy away from adversity,” Harding said. “Shields is bringing this same mindset to our team here at Carty & Co., and I have no doubt he will quickly be just as successful in this business.”
