Two Apollo 13 astronauts, James Lovell and Fred Haise, and mission control flight director Gene Krantz will speak about their infamous moon mission at 7 p.m. April 23 at Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville.
The event is sponsored by the student Distinguished Lecture Series. It is free and no tickets are required.
Lovell and Haise were captain and lunar module pilot of Apollo 13 when it launched on April 11, 1970. The mission was supposed to be the third NASA mission to land men on the moon, but the spacecraft was crippled two days into the flight. Working with mission control, the astronauts began making on a series of repairs that eventually returned them safely to Earth on April 17.
The crew’s story played out on live television around the world. It was dramatized in “Apollo 13,” a 1995 Oscar-winning film directed by Ron Howard. In the film, Tom Hanks played Lovell, Bill Paxton played Haise and Ed Harris played Krantz.
In a news release, the UA said the three will recount their experiences, explore the lessons of Apollo 13 and discuss the future of NASA and the U.S. space program during their visit.
