Nelson Miller Among Eight to Plead Guilty in Freedom Financial Case

Nelson Miller, former owner of Freedom Financial Services in Little Rock, pleaded guilty last week to two misdemeanor counts of making false statements and, as sole owner of Freedom Financial, to one count of felony bank fraud on behalf of the corporation.

On Monday, Arkansasbusiness.com reported incorrectly that Miller had personally pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bank fraud. Those felony charges were among 16 that were dropped in exchange for his guilty pleas to the misdemeanors.

Miller has not yet been sentenced.

U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins of Little Rock announced Monday that seven defendants, in addition to Miller and the corporation, had entered guilty pleas in connection with business activities at Freedom Financial before it was raided by FBI agents in March 2002.

The jury trial of the only remaining defendant, Bertram Case "Casey" Miller, who is not related to Nelson Miller, began Monday in U.S. District Court in Little Rock and continued Tuesday morning.

The other defendants who made plea deals:

• Nichole Jones, 31, of Hot Springs Village, who pleaded guilty to fraud on March 22, 2005. She was sentenced to one day in jail and five years of supervised release and ordered, with other defendants, to pay restitution of $146,673.

• David Fleming, 45, of Cordova, Tenn., who pleaded guilty to fraud on March 29, 2005. He was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay restitution of $11,965.

• Robert Byrd, 55, of Gautier, Miss., who pleaded guilty to fraud on April 5, 2005. He was sentenced to one day in jail, three years of supervised release and restitution of $21,491.

• Arlene Ladd, 46, of Mabelvale, who pleaded guilty to misprision of — that is, failure to report — a felony on March 31, 2005. She was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to pay restitution totaling $354,425.

• Michael Dorsey of Metairie, La., who pleaded guilty to conspiracy on July 25, 2006. He has not yet been sentenced.

• Melissa Horner of O'Fallon, Mo., who pleaded guilty to misprision of a felony and mail fraud on July 14, 2006. She has not yet been sentenced.
