El Dorado Getting T.J. Maxx Outlet

1 min read

A long-awaited deal with T.J. Maxx will see the department store opening at the Mellor Park Mall in El Dorado.

The store will be moving into the former M.M. Cohn space on Northwest Avenue, said Henry Florsheim, CEO of the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce.

Florsheim said the deal was the result of working with T.J. Maxx for more than a year.

He said that last year, city leadership “worked on a strategic plan on how we could better attract and retain young professionals. One of the four areas of priority was we have a shortage of diversity in retail opportunities. We know a lot of people drive to Monroe, Shreveport and Little Rock to shop, so the more retail opportunities we have here, the more likely people will stay here to spend money, and people from elsewhere will come here.”

Florsheim said an Atwood’s Ranch & Home scheduled to open in a former K-Mart space was also part of that plan.

“We’re not only putting vacant buildings back into commerce, we’re generating more sales tax here,” he said. “Our economic development tax is a sales tax, so the more retail activity we have here, the more funds we generate for more economic development projects.”

Florsheim said construction plans were being worked out for the T.J. Maxx, and a timeframe for the store’s opening was not immediately available.
