A-State Boosters Steve and Sharon Bryant Die in Single-Engine Plane Crash

1 min read

Steve Bryant, 72, owner of Bryant’s Pharmacy in Batesville, and his wife Sharon, 73, who were noted boosters of Arkansas State University athletics, died in a single-engine plane crash Sunday in northeast Arkansas.

The privately owned plane was located in a field outside Marianna after dispatchers received a report of a possible crash. The two had been traveling from Florida to an airport in Batesville.

Arkansas State Police said they handed over the investigation to the National Transportation Safety Board.

In a news release, A-State said the Bryants, both of whom were alumni, were “highly-respected members of the Batesville, Ark., community and cherished members of the Arkansas State University family.” The Bryants were longtime season-ticket holders and donors to A-State athletics.

Steve Bryant played defensive end for A-State’s football team under head coaches Bennie Ellender in 1970 and Bill Davidson in 1971-72. He was part of the 1970 team that went undefeated with an 11-0 record on its way to a college division national championship.
