Academy Sports & Outdoors of Katy, Texas, recently spent $2.63 million on nearly 8 acres of land in Jonesboro to build a store in the Fairgrounds Re-Development shopping center.
The store will be 73,000-SF and the construction cost will be $5.25 million, according to Academy’s building permit application on file with the city of Jonesboro.
Construction is expected to begin soon and the store is projected to be opened by the fall, according to a source familiar with the deal who asked not to be identified.
Academy officials couldn’t be reached for comment.
Academy bought the land from the Craighead County Fairgrounds Association and will join Panera Bread Co., Cheddars Restaurant and Sissy’s Log Cabin in the 38-acre shopping center development.
Academy "will make the site a likely landing place for new restaurants and other retailers over the course of the next two years," Joshua Brown of Haag Brown Commercial of Jonesboro, said in a news release. Haag Brown represented the Fairgrounds Association in the transaction. "We are already seeing the fruits from landing Academy on our development."
Brown declined to comment further on the announcement.
Academy has 140 stores located in the South.
