AFCU Adds Sherwood to ExpansionLock Icon

2 min read

Maybe you’ve heard about Arkansas Federal Credit Union opening or planning to open branches in Hot Springs, Benton and on Maumelle Boulevard in North Little Rock, but did you know Sherwood has joined that mix?

The credit union, headquartered in Jacksonville, recently acquired a former Twin City Bank location in Sherwood for $535,000 from JWJ Investments LLC of North Little Rock, led by Steven Jenkins.

The 2,904-SF branch at 301 E. Kiehl Ave. will be renovated and opened in the second quarter of next year, President and CEO Rodney Showmar told Whispers.

“We just got through opening our new Hot Springs branch,” he said. “Maumelle is next on the list, so we’re actively working on Maumelle, to get that branch up and running. And then, I believe, we’ll probably move on to Benton and Sherwood. We’ll be opening Maumelle right after the first of the year. And then probably the Benton location and the Sherwood location sometime in the second quarter of next year.”

All of the new facilities will have more space dedicated to offices than to teller lines, he said. Existing branches are being remodeled as well.

The idea is for AFCU employees to “have more sit-down conversations and relationship-building with our members,” Showmar said, because basic transactions have moved to the credit union’s “robust” website and mobile app.

“We want to provide more space so that people can have some one-on-one interaction with our folks that are in the branch so that we can help make a difference for them in a more customized, individualized manner.”

New branches are being placed in areas with a high concentration of existing credit union members.

“Sherwood, we’ve always had a good concentration of members there. They’ve been using the North Little Rock branch on North Hills for quite some time,” he said. “But we had a great opportunity to get that building over there and to try to help our members in Sherwood have a little shorter drive and be more convenient to their location up in Sherwood.”
