Arkansas Department of Agriculture Extends Century Farm Honor to Longtime Farm Families

1 min read

Families who have owned and farmed their land for at least 100 years are eligible for an honor through the state Agriculture Department.

The department’s Century Farm Program identifies those properties that have remained within a family and in agricultural operation for such an extended period.

Begun in 2012, the program is voluntary and does not restrict the land in any way, according to a release from the department. Nearly 250 farms have earned the designation.

To qualify, farms must have been in the same family for 100 years by Dec. 31, 2015, and the farm must be at least 10 acres of the original land and must contribute to the overall farm income.

There is no cost to apply, and applications are due May 31. Applications — from the property owner — are available through the Agriculture Department. Call (501) 683-4851 or visit the department’s website.

If awarded the designation, applicants will receive a metal sign and certificate.
