Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care Gets New CEO (Super Mover)

John Selig is the new CEO of the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care. He succeeds Ray Hanley, who retired after leading the health care nonprofit for more than a decade. Selig was selected by AFMC’s board of directors after a nationwide search. In his new role, he will lead the organization in focusing on improving health and health care through AFMC’s private and public partnerships.

Selig most recently worked as vice president of public sector growth at health insurance company Optum of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and as senior vice president of the Lewin Group, a consulting business unit of Optum. Before that, he was director of the Arkansas Department of Human Services from 2005-16, the longest-serving director in the department’s history. Before his work at DHS, Selig was director of the Arkansas Division of Mental Health Services. He also worked at Little Rock New Futures, in the office of U.S. Sen. David Pryor and in the U.S. Peace Corps. He was named Arkansas Mental Health Professional of the Year and received the Dover Award for Exceptional Service to People With Disabilities and the Arkansas Minority Health Commission Governor’s Health Policy Award.

Selig graduated with his Bachelor of Science in industrial management and public policy from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. He has an MBA from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. Selig was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, a National Merit Scholar and a Weyerhaeuser Foundation Scholar.
