ArkansasSports360.com: Red Wolves Dig Deeper Into Sun Belt Tournament

2 min read

Today on ArkansasSports360.com:

In a Sun Belt Conference precendent-setting upset, ninth-seed Arkansas State stunned top-seed Middle Tennessee 64-61 in the quarterfinal round of the league’s men’s tourey Sunday night at Hot Springs’ Summit Arena. ASU, now 14-19, moves into Monday’s semifinal round against North Texas.

ArkansasSports360.com Columnist is covering the games at Hot Springs and finds that even though there is another conference rival located much closer to Spa City, the Red Wolves’ fanbase is still out in force.

There will be a new Sun Belt champion this season. UALR, last year’s winners, was forced out in its quarterfinal by Western Kentucky 68-63.

Arkansas Tech will be listed first in the books as the Great American Conference’s winner of the first basketball championship. The Wonder Boys will now face West Texas A&M Saturday in the NCAA D-II Basketball Tournament.

Arkansas placed three players on the all-tournament team for the Houston College Classic. Pitchers Barrett Astin and Ryne Stanek were selected, along with infielder Dominic Ficociello after the Razorbacks (11-2) went 2-1 in the classic. Arkansas had a 3-1 win against Texas Tech, lost to Houston and ended the weekend with a 7-3 win against Texas.

Finally, Arkansas may be saying goodbye to an old rivalry, albeit one that felt a little artificial from the start. South Carolina has stated that it would be more interested in facing new member Texas A&M as a permanent interdivisional opponent. Arkansas would likely shed no tears and welcome the "short" roadtrip to Columbia, Mo., to face Missouri as its permanent rival.
