Arkansas State University said it has begun talks with the New York Institute of Technology to see if they can agree on opening an osteopathic medical school on the Jonesboro campus.
“At this point, we are in discussions … to see if it’s feasible to open an osteopathic school,” Barbara Ross-Lee, vice president for health sciences and medical affairs at the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, told Arkansas Business. “There are a lot of pieces that go into it. We have to make sure that we have the appropriate clinical training facilities as well as the community base in which we could do medical training.”
On Nov. 21, ASU signed a 90-day memorandum of understanding with NYIT to discuss a possible arrangement.
If the schools reach a deal, NYIT, which is one of the top osteopathic schools in the country with about 300 graduating students per year, would handle the education on the Jonesboro campus, Ross-Lee said.
She said it’s unclear at this point what the cost would be to start the school at ASU.
