Dillard’s Same-store Sales Unchanged in January

1 min read

Dillard’s Inc. of Little Rock said Thursday that same-store sales were unchanged in January, while total sales declined 1 percent.

In all, the department store chain reported $363.5 million in merchandise sales for the 27 days ending Jan. 28. That compares to $366.4 million in merchandise sales for the 27 days ending Jan. 29, 2011.

For the period, Dillard’s reported January sales inclusive of 27 days ending on Jan. 28, because it included Jan. 1 in its December period for comparability purposes.

In December, Dillard’s reported same-store sales up 4 percent for the month.

Dillard’s is among several national retailers reporting January sales results on Thursday. Most are reporting mixed sales results, a sign that American shoppers are continuing to be cautious about when and where they spend their money in the shaky economy.

Sales for company’s 52-week period ending Jan. 28 were $6.2 billion compared to sales for the 52-week period ending Jan. 29, 2011 of $6.0 billion. Total sales increased 3 percent, and same-store increased 4 percent.

During the month, Dillard’s said sales were "consistent" with trend in its eastern region, "slightly" below trend in its western region and below trend in its central region.

Sales in its shoes and home and furniture were "significantly" above trend during the month, and sales in men’s apparel and accessories were "significantly" below trend.

Dillard’s has stores in 29 states.
