Dollar General announced that it now offers fresh fruit and vegetables at 10 of its stores in Little Rock, part of a plan with local officials and the nonprofit Fifty for the Future to address food deserts in the city.
The company, which is building a $140 million distribution center in North Little Rock, said it has agreed to pilot a program to remodel stores to increase food accessibility. The plan also includes community outreach about healthier food options.
The following Dollar General locations in Little Rock now sell fresh produce:
- 4748 Springer Blvd.
- 3124 W. Roosevelt Rd.
- 7501 Mabelvale Cutoff Rd.
- 15616 Alexander Rd.
- 14600 Arch Street Pike
- 3500 John Barrow Rd.
- 12626 Lawson Rd.
- 5023 Baseline Rd.
- 4701 W. 65 St.
- 9125 Stagecoach Rd.
“We realize that this doesn’t completely solve the problem, but it certainly goes a long way toward ensuring that fresh and flash-frozen produce, as well as other household staples and healthier food items, are more accessible to many of our citizens,” Little Rock City Director Dean Kumpuris said in a news release.
Dollar General currently offers fresh produce at about 2,300 of its 18,000 stores. It plans to expand those healthy offerings to 3,000 stores by early 2023.
