Public officials and economic development leaders throughout Mississippi County gathered Tuesday with representatives from the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) for a mayor’s summit focused on future growth in the region.
Now the largest steel-producing county in the U.S., Mississippi County is a hub for steel manufacturing and is an emerging leader in the renewable energy and aerospace industries. Over the past two decades, the region has added 9,000 jobs and nearly $8 billion in capital investment.
The meeting included presentations by the Delta Center for Economic Development at Arkansas State University, East Arkansas Planning and Development District, the AEDC and the Delta Regional Authority.
“This event showcased the strong partnerships that have been built between Mississippi County and key economic development agencies across Arkansas,” Chitwood said in a press release. “We were proud to highlight the collaborative efforts that continue to drive growth and create new opportunities for businesses and residents in the region.”
Representatives from AEDC’s Business Development and Site Selection teams highlighted state-level initiatives to attract new industries to the region.
“Mississippi County has greatly benefited from the support of AEDC and the state of Arkansas,” Mississippi County Judge John Alan Nelson said in the release. “Intentional, strategic partnerships have enabled us to achieve significant economic progress, and we look forward to continuing this momentum as we strengthen our infrastructure and create more job opportunities. We have built a solid foundation for economic development in Mississippi County and we’re confident that this will continue and help us maintain our leadership in regional economic development.”
