Update: Ed’s Custom Bakery Says It Will Reopen in Conway

(Editor’s Note: A correction has been made and an update added to this article. See the end for details.)

Ed’s Custom Bakery, a longtime and popular bakery in Conway, has shut its doors but will reopen next week.

Ed’s, founded in 1980, had changed hands a couple of times in recent years. Clare Tolleson was the most recent owner.

Employees apparently received no notice, and as of press time on Thursday, Jan. 28, Ed’s Facebook page showed no signs of a change in status. Calls to Tolleson were met with a busy signal, and calls to the bakery went unanswered.

But on Tuesday, Ed’s said said on Facebook that it will reopen under new ownership on Feb. 9.

“We are proud to announce that we are now veteran owned by Joseph Langer, retired USAF. Joe, age 37, a flight engineer on C-130’s, is currently employed at Union Pacific Railroad. He is proud to carry on this community’s long time tradition we all know and love, Ed’s Custom Bakery,” the Facebook post said.

“We will open back up for business Tuesday, February 9th. Come in and grab an old favorite and try something new from our daily specials. We hate that there was uncertainty and that we couldn’t share this news with you sooner, but we needed to wait until it was official.”

Ed’s was the latest in a string of bakeries in central Arkansas to have closed, among them Bliss Cupcake Cafe in Conway, Sweet Love in Little Rock and Sassy Cake Lady in North Little Rock. And, as we’ve reported, Silvek’s Bakery in the Kroger in the Heights is seeking a buyer.

Correction: A previous version of this article said Brown Sugar Bakeshop had closed. But it remains open at a new location, 801 S. Chester St. in Little Rock. More details are on its Facebook page here and its website here. The article also said Gigi’s Cupcakes closed, but its Little Rock locations remain open. More details are on its Facebook page here and website here.
