Former USA Truck CEO John Simone Remembered for Heart, Laughter

1 min read

The news that USA Truck CFO Michael Borrows resigned — with a $630,000 parachute — reminded Whispers he was another of former CEO John Simone’s hires who has left the company.

Simone, who died of lung cancer March 24 in Florida, led the turnaround at USA Truck that reversed six consecutive years of red ink. He was a popular boss during his two years at USA Truck.

“John was very professional,” said his former executive assistant Stephanie Howard. “He was very stern, but he had a heart. He wanted what was best for the company.”

Howard, who left USA Truck to take a job at Beall Barclay in Fort Smith, said she almost made a bad impression on Simone, who she picked up from the airport when he flew in to interview originally at USA Truck.

“When I picked him up at the airport, we laughed and talked about Fort Smith, no pressure because I didn’t think I’d be working for him,” Howard said. “When I found out that he was going to be my new boss, I was like, ‘OK, did I say anything in the car that could incriminate me?’”
