Fulton County Hospital to Join Baxter Health

1 min read

Fulton County Hospital in Salem has reached a long-term agreement to become part of the Baxter Health System, the health providers announced Thursday.

The decision comes six months after the 25-bed hospital entered into an agreement to have Baxter Health manage the facility. That agreement will continue through 2024, with a long-term lease to be executed by Jan. 1.

The hospital in October was awarded $5 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds from a pot of $60 million set aside by the state for struggling hospitals.

In a news release, the providers said that Baxter Health’s oversight has helped increase volumes across various hospital service lines, including swing bed and endoscopy. The release says that Baxter Health has also improved the hospital’s revenue cycle; addressed price transparency and other compliance issues; and helped generate positive cash flow to settle debts with key suppliers and fulfill payroll obligations.

“The encouragement from both the hospital staff and the wider community throughout our management partnership have been nothing short of extraordinary,” Anthony Reed, interim administrator of the hospital, said in a statement. “In the challenging landscape of critical access hospitals, where resources are scarce, Baxter Health has stepped in to bridge that gap. We brought to the table a wealth of resources in financial management and operational strategies.

“The team at Fulton County Hospital has demonstrated remarkable openness and willingness to collaborate with Baxter Health. Together, we’re committed to steering the hospital towards a stable and sustainable future.”
