About 47.9 percent of all Arkansas households have a dog, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Among the 50 states, Massachusetts had the lowest canine ownership among households at 23.6 percent.
The 150-year-old nonprofit, based in Schaumburn, Ill., publishes its U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook every five years. The recently released numbers are actually for 2011.
Back in 2006, Arkansas ranked No. 7 with dog ownership of 48.8 percent.
