Hot Jobs: Solar Ranked as Fastest-Growing Occupation

1 min read

Renewable energy and health care top the list of the fastest-growing jobs in the United States in 2016-26, as predicted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Those jobs, however, aren’t necessarily where the most openings exist. “Some occupations that are projected to grow rapidly have a relatively small number of jobs, as is the case with solar photovoltaic installers and wind turbine service technicians,” the bureau says. “These small, fast-growing occupations may not have many new jobs.”

In addition, “Some large occupations that are projected to have average or slow employment growth, such as child care workers and retail salespersons, may have many new jobs.”

Finally, the bureau notes that “large occupations,” those employing many workers, such as the food service and retail sectors, “are more likely than small ones to have many projected openings, shown as annual averages. This is true regardless of their projected rate of growth; in fact, even occupations that are projected to decline in employment will still have openings.”

The bureau predicts overall employment to grow by about 7 percent between 2016 and 2026.
