J.B. Hunt Sues Tech Company Over Cybersecurity

2 min read

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell has sued TTEC Holdings Inc. of Denver over an “elementary mistake.”

That “elementary mistake” caused a security vulnerability in software the company’s subsidiary installed for J.B. Hunt’s online driver recruiting platform.

J.B. Hunt accused Avtex Solutions of breaching its contract and negligence in a lawsuit filed in Benton County Circuit Court by Jason Wales of Wales & Mikesch, a law firm based in Fayetteville.

J.B. Hunt said it contracted with Avtex Solutions of Bloomington, Minnesota, to implement the driver portal in June 2019.

Avtex Solutions was acquired by TTEC Holdings in April 2021.

J.B. Hunt said the portal was activated in late 2020.

In July 2021, the suit said, a third-party cybersecurity firm alerted J.B. Hunt that the portal could allow access to personal information entered by driver candidates.

According to J.B. Hunt’s complaint, the vulnerability was a result of Avtex’s failure to disable an access feature, something the company called an “elementary mistake.”

The transport services company said the vulnerability was corrected before any information was accessed by any third party.

The company said that, as required by law, it contacted attorneys general to alert them of the vulnerability.

In the suit, J.B. Hunt said several lawsuits were filed but were dismissed on legal grounds other than one that was settled out of court.

J.B. Hunt is asking for undisclosed damages.

A spokesman for TTEC denied J.B. Hunt’s allegations.

“TTEC vehemently refutes the allegations in J.B. Hunt’s complaint, including but not limited to a supposed security vulnerability caused by Avtex, and that TTEC is somehow liable for any purported damages claimed by J.B. Hunt,” the company said in a statement to Arkansas Business.

“Neither allegation is true. We are confident that we will prevail in this matter. Given that this matter is now in litigation, TTEC cannot comment further.”
