Jonesboro Doctor Faces 128 Felony Fraud Counts

1 min read

A Jonesboro family practice doctor recently was charged with 128 felony counts of fraud in connection with obtaining prescription drugs from a pharmacy under a false name.

Since January 2012, Dr. Valerie Sloan had allegedly bought the drugs by calling in prescriptions for pain medication for a patient who didn’t exist, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the District Court of Craighead County. She then allegedly would pick up the drugs at a Jonesboro pharmacy.

A pharmacy employee became suspicious because Sloan would wear a baseball cap or scarf “as if to hide her identity,” the affidavit said.

The employee reported his suspicions to police on March 29. On April 1, Sloan returned to the pharmacy and officers were called. Sloan allegedly gave officers a fake name and date of birth. She was arrested after her story fell apart under questioning, the affidavit said.

She is facing up to 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000 for each count of fraud to obtain drugs.
