Jonesboro announced it has received a $137,970 federal grant to support energy initiatives in the city.
The city will use the funds to purchase LED lighting to enhance roadway and pedestrian safety while improving energy efficiency, the city said in a news release. Additionally, the city will provide grants to nonprofit organizations for building retrofits, ultimately saving the nonprofits money and promoting the sustainability of their public infrastructure.
Remaining funds will be deployed for an energy assessment of Jonesboro City Hall, according to the release.
“We continue to find ways to increase public safety, and lighting is one important element, “Mayor Harold Copenhaver said. “To be the only recipient of this funding in the state is a testament to the hard work and thoughtful use of resources, including these types of competitive awards. This is part of a larger initiative to light up our corridors.”
This grant does not require matching dollars. Jonesboro was one of 61 local and territorial governments in the U.S. to receive the funding.
The funds were awarded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program.
