The Challenge
The tiny farming town of Keo faced a steep decline in community engagement, identity and revenue after losing a flagship institution. As its population dwindled, Keo struggled to bring residents together for volunteerism and civic activities. With its remote feel, despite being just 25 minutes from Little Rock, Keo wanted to build its own sense of community and inclusivity, particularly across diverse racial and age groups, as residents became less involved in local events and public life.
The Solution
Enter the Keo Collective, a grassroots volunteer group, which partnered with the city to revitalize community spirit by organizing inclusive events. One notable success was a Día del Niño celebration, a traditional Mexican event honoring children, which brought the entire town together. With partnerships from Harps grocery and Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the event featured free food, music, piñatas and games. Colorful decorations lined Main Street, and the mayor secured a proclamation from the governor. The event signaled the beginning of a cultural and community renewal.
The Día del Niño is now planned annually and officials are exploring opportunities to add other events during Hispanic Heritage month.
